Kenneth / Judith. You are correct. The house they stayed in is in Fort Motte. Sullivan Reese did a lot of traveling - he worked on and off for the railroad. How are you related - what are your mother's and grand-parents names? I'm going to ask my mother - she may have some other rememberences. Judith: I only did the maternal DNA trace which would trace the maternal Adams branch. My maternal grandfather's surname is Larrymore. He married Daisy Starks (descended from the Bosticks). My great-grandparents on that side were Adonis Larrymore and Mariah Bonaparte. The Sasportas side is my father. All my family are 19th Century South Carolina natives.

Hi Edwin and Kenneth!  May I ask what other information turned up in the DNA?  Are you going to have a male DNA test done?

I have the same death certificate via ancestry.com. Thanks for the clarification of Bolton and Shuler. I have Daisy Starks. You've answered my questions about Lillie. I see her living with her Aunt Mary Bostick Reese in 1910 along with her cousins Daisy Starks and Sullivan Reese. Lillie then lived with Sullivan. She was then Lillie Howell. I have Sullivan's obituary. Here is the transcription.

The State--Columbia, SC, Wednesday, September 3 1969

Judith / Kenneth. Things are getting interesting. I have a copy of Angeline Adam's death certificate. Her mother's name was Eliza Adams. My mother was her great-grandaughter. My mother always said the family were mixed-Native American Indians. We did a maternal DNA swab for my Mom and it turn out Southeast Asia ancestry - which validates the Indian connection since Native Americans originally came to the Americas via Asia. Kenneth - I'm familiar with the names you mentioned regarding some of Joel Bostick's children. Hilliard was the oldest and my mother said his family was more well-off than others in the community. Emma is my great-grandmother. She had three children, including my grandmother Daisy Starks and granduncle John Bolton. I remember "Uncle John" very well - we used to visit him as children in Baltimore. They all had different fathers (Emma got around:-)). Mr. Shuler was a step-father who she married briefly much later. Lillie Bostick was known as Cousin Lilly. She was an illegitimate child of Hilliard - but was raised with the family. She lived with my great-grandmother. My mother has an old photograph of Nancy who you have listed as died in 1932. The reference to Governor James Hopkins Adams is an interesting lead - the connection would be with an Elizabeth or Eliza Adams. I believe that Angeline Adams had a brother named Ransom who may have married a Dicey Bostick. This would not be surprising given the close proximity of the families and the inter-relationships.

Wow!  So interesting!  Great researching, Ken!  I want to check out Gov. James Hopkins Adams!

Angeline may be the daughter of former South Carolina Governor James Hopkins Adams who served from 1854-1856. I have seen some Family Trees that have him linked to her as his daughter. Speculation perhaps I don't know.

He was Born: March 15, 1812 in Minervaville, SC

Died: July 13, 1861 near Columbia, SC.

Dicey may have married a man named Ransom Adams for I find them in the 1860 census They were listed as dwelling # 19 on the census. Dwelling 20 was Joel and Angeline Bostick with 2 children Hilliard and Thomas. The Governor lived in the same area.

Edwin,  I count at least 12 children for Joel and Angeline. BTW Edwin what was your great grandmothers husbands name. I recall having some questions regarding her. Is there anyone with the name of Orphas Shuler? In the 1900 census there was a John Bolton living with Angeline Bostick who was 6 years old listed as a grandson. This was on June 27, 1900. Four days earlier on June 23,  I find in the same census I see an Emma and Orphas Shuler with a child named John A Bolton 6 yrs old listed as a son their household. I am assuming he may have been counted twice perhaps he was at his grandmothers house on the 27th. Speculating of course. There was also a Lily Bostick living with Angeline the same year listed as her granddaughter.

The children I found are:

Thomas: 1855

Hilliard:  1857-1907? He may have been a postmaster .who has a great granddaughter named Marilyn Gilmore(nee) Johnson who lives in Colorado. My Aunt and I have actually talked to her. She met my Aunt Hazel several years ago.

Preston: Jan 1861- d 11 Dec 1922

Mary:  May 1865  d 16 Dec 1937

Emma:  May 1868

John: May 1870

Nancy A: 17 Dec 1872  d 5 Sep 1932

James:  1872

William: 1874

Ransom: 1876

Joel: Apr 1877 d 24 Jul 1948

Masky: Mar 1884

I am hoping that after digging all this up they are really my relatives.

I hope this is something new for you.

Hi Kenneth and Edwin!  I would love to know more about this William Bostick. Is this Richland County?  The names of James and John fit in with.a  John Bostick but that does not mean a William is impossible.

Judith / Kenneth.  From what I know Joel Bostick and Angeline Adams lived in Amelia Township in 1880.  They had at least 9 children including my great-grandmother Emma.  The 1850 Census has Joel living as a free mulatto planter in Richland County.  Also listed in the household were James, Martha, Dicey and John. I'm guessing they were siblings.  I know prior to that there was a large slaveowner named William Bostick who in 1830 slave schedules had 21 slaves. I think there was a Bostick Plantation. This is interesting ...so many families in Carolina are connected in some way.
