I am looking for an Alfred Raymond. He was born between 1840-1860 in Arkansas. He was african american. I have located a Slave Owner with the same name, but cannot pin him down. He was possibly married to Mary Clayton in either Arkansas or Mississippi.

They did not stay together very long and she moved between Mississippi and Memphis and stayed with various relatives. Their son was James C. Raymond Sr., born in Mississippi 1917. Any information would help. Thank you.

Hi Danielle:
Have you located a birth certificate for James C. Raymond (1917- ), so that we can make sure to include those dates and specific locations (ala, the most timely record of his birth) when we identify record groups? Did you locate James in the 1920 census? Perhaps you also have James death certificate? Does James' death certificate leave us a notation about his father's name/father's birth place. Does the death certificate mention his mother's name as "Mary Clayton?"

You wrote, "Alfred Raymond. He was born between 1840-1860 in Arkansas." Hope to learn how we developed the estimate of Alfred's age. Do you have reason to believe he was quite older at the time James was born? If Alfred was born 1840, he would have been almost 80 at the time James was born. If Alfred was born in 1860, he would have been 60 at the time of Alfred's birth.

Would love to help. --GJJames'
I was in the process of moving and did not get copies before I left PGH. I have ordered them and will get back to you. I do know that James did not speak of his father and I do not think that Mary ever married him. All we have is a picture and the knowledge that they came from Arkansas. Thank you for your response and I will be in touch.
