I do not belong to Ancestry but looked at the census the other day. I can see names but not the actual form or details. Would someone please look in the 1840 census in Surry, Va. for Nathaniel H. Williams and tell me what it says about this person? There is also a Nathaniel Williams in Harrison and Isle of Wright, Va. Hopefully one of them could be my husband's gg-grandfather. In 1840 I expect him to be single and only 20 years old. He moved to Gallia, Ohio and does not marry until 1847. Just can't seem to find him in Virginia before he moves to Ohio.

Hi Sandra-
I'll take a look: On the 1840 census in Surry, VA

1 male 15-20 years of age
1 male 50-60
1 female 10-15 years of age
1 female 15-20
1 female 40-50

I'm thinking Nathaniel H is the father, age 50-60, or the 15-20 year old is head of household for some reason, which would be unusual. :)

In Harrison County, there is not a 20 year old male in either the 15-20 or 20-30 age range

In Isle of WIght:

1 male 15-20
1 male 20-30
2 females under 5
1 female 5-10
1 female 15-20
1 female 20-30

So in this case, I am assuming a married couple the 20-30 years olds live with some of their own children and some siblings?
Thank you Kate for the lookup. It was a stab in the dark, so to speak. Nathaniel was born in Greenbrier Co., Va. in 1820, what town I do not know. He grew up on his father's farm there. I saw that Nathaniel with the middle initial H. in Ancestry and was hoping I struck pay dirt......gues not. Looking for Nathaniel's father is impossible with the name William Williams. There were several of them in Greenbrier in that time period. I thought Nathaniel would be easier. Thank you again for looking.
Here is the low down on Nathaniel.

There were 5 people in the household, recorded as:

Free White # Age Range in Years
Males 1 15 to under 20
1 50 to under 60
Free White
Females 1 10 to under 15
1 15 to under 20
1 40 to under 50

No Free Colored People
No Slaves

1 person was classified as being a Manufacturer or in the Trades

Hope this helps.
Duh, I forgot to scroll down and see the first reply before I sent mine. Oh well, a second opinion is always recommended.
LOL that is ok Susan, I appreciate your efforts anyway. I am thinking that it is very possible that this Nathaniel H. Williams could possibly be our Nathaniel Williams grandfather. It is just strange that he also has the initial H. I do have a question though, does Ancestry have land records and wills too?
Hello, Sandra ~
You mention your Nathaniel Williams was born 1820 in Greenbrier Co., VA. Did you mean Greenbrier Co., West Virginia? Because there is no Greenbrier Co. in VA, but G.Co., WV, is very close to the stateline.

Ancestry.com does have databases of land records & wills for many states, so I was trying to look up your Nathaniel Williams, but I thought I might get clarification from you on the birth location first. Another point of clarification, your relative definitely had a middle initial "H" in the name, correct?

Trying to help,
Sue
