Hello Everyone. I hope someone can assist me with an occurring problem with Family Tree 2011. This is a new problem, and I have stayed patient until recently - enough is enough.

1. A profile will show a green leaf. When I click it on the leaf, I find "private trees." The search continues to spin and spin and spin and never stops. I can't select to ignore option to keep them from showing up over and over. You can't "ignore" a private tree, plus it the search just keeps scrolling in a circile. Is anyone having this problem?

2. When I look at a document or a tree, in a few seconds a quarter of the top page appears blank. I have to close the page and start over, which is very annoying. Is anyone having this problem?

3. When I try to add a photo to a profile, FTM closes down. I've signed in as administrator and sometimes it will allow me to add a photo and other times not.

These are the three main problems. There are more but these are the most annoying and time consuming, to the point I lose important information or I forget what I was doing to start.

I have checked for updates/patches and I'm told I'm up to date.

I have approximately 9500 profiles, 2500 marriages, and 58,000 KB (photos/documents)

If I purchased the FTM 2012, would it solve all of the above problems? All was well until recently. I'm not having any problems with other programs, or are they slow as family tree. Thanks

Bonnie,

Where are you doing this search from? The way you talked, in #1, it was from your Ancestry Member Tree. In FTM2011, you can turn OFF hints for online trees, in the Tools, Options menu.

Russ

Russ, I am doing searchs in my Family Tree Maker, not Ancestry

As a researcher, the search mode is very important. It's as if my FTM software gets stuck in the search mode when "private trees" show up. Private trees are not suppose to appear. I have heard others complaining about private trees showing up when they click on a green leaf.

This is a new problem with my  FTM. It is also very annoying that the once I'm at a public  tree/source, over half the page goes blank. There must be a gliche now with my software.

I plan to call Ancestry today to see if I'm lacking a patch since the 2012 has been released. I depend on the hints for any new developments on a profile I'm working. We are working on one family and we're on the brink of solving decades of questions.

I do not work in Ancestry as a rule. Mainl,y because years ago when they upgraded their system, my tree suddenly multiplied every profils 10-12- times. Ancestry said they could NOT merge the profiles, and suggested I begin merging the extra 50,000 profiles on my FTM. As you know this is very time consuming. Or, I could delete the tree and start another tree, losing all my work. It is my hope to complete the mergining (2 yrs now) soon and upload a corrected FTM tree.

I am aware that i can can go offline, but I need to stay on line. My work is now doubled since I have to work on ancestry and then go FTM and add my sources/photos.

Thank you for your quick response Russ.

Bonnie,

Actually Private Tree ARE to show up. The owner of the private tree has the option for it NOT to be found by the indexing system. The Private Tree, with indexing, allows you to contact the owner of the Private Tree if you want.

So, that is working as it is supposed to work.

Where is are you seeing the "over half the page goes blank"? That sounds like a browser issue or that the scroll bars aren't being used to see the full page?

Not sure what patch for FTM2011 you are talking about..

In your Ancestry Member Tree (AMT), there isn't a way to Merge "profiles". Please explain a little more on the "suddenly multiplies every profiles 10-12 times? Is that in your AMT? OR are you seeing many AMTs?

Remember that in FTM2011 you can only upload NEW AMTs from within FTM2011. FTM2012 allows you to update your AMT from within FTM2012.

Not sure how your are using FTM2011. Are you maintaining TWO trees? One on Ancestry and the other in FTM2011?

Russ

Russ, the blank portion of the page appears at the top of the page and covers 3/4 of the page - color gray. I have to go to another page and then come back to the original page. Again, it will do the same thing.

As for a patch, Ancestry gave me a patch once on a 2010 FTM to correct a problem, and it worked.

Russ, I'm sorry I'm not explaining my problem clearly. I know that we are allowed to see "private trees," and I have gotten so many good responses from them when emailing about family. Let me try to explain this one again.

When I open up a profile, a green leaf appears. I click it on and am given a choice to "ignore" the options. However, there are private trees showing up, and I cannot use the "ignore" prompt on a private tree. Instead, it "spin" keeps running, trying to open the tree. So I have many profiles with private trees that I cannot choose the "ignore" option. I can simply ignore them; that's not a problem, but this has just occurred recently.

No, I am NOT using the tree on Ancestry - I am not maintaining two trees. I only utilize the search and other options available in Ancestry. I do not make any changes in my Ancestry Tree. I learned early on it just creates more profiles. I work primarily in FTM. I have no problems in Ancestry - the problem is with FTM.

Are you saying that I will not be able to upload FTM 2011 to Ancestry once I've merged all the people?

Thanks again. I know it's difficult to correspond by email and causes much confusion. I am calling Ancestry today, so I will get back with you, okay? Bonnie

Bonnie,

When you say "Profile" that tells me your are using your Ancestry Member Tree (AMT).

When you are in FTM2011, the People Workspace, Family View is one place where you will see Hints. There are TWO types of Hints, Records and AMTs. When you click on one of them, you are taken to the Web Search screen, where YOUR information is in the Lower Left, the Top Center is the "Hint", and the Lower Right is the information from that Hint that matches or doesn't match your information. When the spinning stops, you should be able to mark that Hint as Ignore.

Is that what is happening to you? But you need to wait until that lower right window has information in it.

Russ

I am only using the hints for FTM. I do not open hints in AMT. When I click on the hint in FTM, I can delete all hints, but the private trees. The person's profile continue to show the green leaf because I am unable to ignore it. I have waited as long as ten minutes and it just keeps spinning.

On a private tree, nothing shows up, which I'm sure it's not suppose to, and spin bar keeps spinning. Bonnie

Bonnie,

This is a browser issue. What version of MS Internet Explorer is on your computer? What is your Default Browser?

Why not turn OFF the Tree Hints? You can always turn them back on. You do that in the Tools Menu, Options.

Russ

Hi Russ. I contacted Ancestry yesterday, and I was instructed to be the following.

Deleting your user configuration file in Windows Vista or Windows 7

  1. Right-click the Start button and choose Explore (Windows 7 Users - Choose Open Windows Explorer)
  2. Navigate to the C:\Users folder. Click it to open the folder. A triangle icon will appear in a box to the left of the folder name
  3. In the next level, open your profile folder. This generally will be your name or the name you sign on to Windows with. It is most likely NOT the Administrator or All users folder
  4. Open the AppData folder

Note:  If you do not see this folder, click the Organize button from the top left of this window and choose Folder and Search Options.  When this window opens, please click the View tab from the top. On the View tab, select the bullet next to Show hidden files and folders and click OK. The Local Settings folder should now be displayed. If you still can’t find Local Settings, you selected the wrong profile folder. Go back to Users and pick another profile folder.

Open the Local folder

  1. Find a folder called Ancestry.com. Right-click on it and choose Delete.
  2. If you previously had Family Tree Maker 2008/2009, you will also need to delete the folder The_Generations_Network. Close the Windows File Manager when you are done

The technician guided me through this, and the problem was not corrected. I restarted the computer, again, it did not fix the problem. I’m still experiencing the same problems. She emailed 2 sets of instructions. The following was confusing since I saw "two" STRONGNAME folders, and didn't know which one to delete. I plan to call again.

This is the second set of instructions.

Follow steps 1 – 5 above for your operating system then follow these additional steps:

  1. Open the folder labeled IsolatedStorage
  2. Open the only folder that appears (it will probably have a strange name)
  3. Again, open the only folder that appears (it will probably have a strange name)

At this point you should see one or more folders labeled with StrongName… We need to find and delete those that include Family Tree Maker data. To determine this,

Open one of the StrongName… folders. If another “StrongName…” folder appears inside, back up one level and delete that “StrongName…” folder

  1. Repeat step 9 with each of the “StrongName…” folders that show under IsolatedStorage
  2. Close the Windows File Manager when you are done

If you’ve followed the instructions above, and are still receiving this message, it may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall Family Tree Maker.

The technician said I might have a corrupt (?), and they would mail me another. I was instructed to uninstall and reinstall FTM. If that did not correct the problem, call back and they mail another FTM disc.

Bonnie,

After all of that, and that is a trouble shooting technique, are you OK now?

Russ

Yes Russ. Thank you so much for help - it is greatly appreciated. Don't be surprised if you hear from me again;-).

Bonnie,

Glad it's working for you.

Good luck,

Russ

I have been experiencing the same thing. Also there will be a leaf on the page I'm adding things to and when I click on

it, I'm told that  page could not be displayed that it could have been deleted. Mostly these in census reports or city

directories so I can't figure why they aren't displayed.

Another problem I have is I have permission to view private family trees and when there is a photo I want to add to

my tree it won't let me.

Good luck.
