Researching Jones and Saint families from Owens Cross Roads and New Hope. My great grandmother, Mary (Mollie) A Saint Jones, died in 1920 in Owens Cross Roads; not sure where she's buried however. Any information on Mollie, her father (Thomas C Saint), her husband and my great grandfather (James Monroe Jones) or James' father (James Henry Jones) would be greatly appreciated.

I was wondering if anyone is doing any historical research on the migration during the slavery years from NC, SC and GA into Alabama? I'm finding that many of my relatives came from SC or NC to Alabama through slavery.

Has anyone been to the Barbour County courthouse? Can you tell me a little about your experience? Are the files easy to find? I have found new information showing that many family members lived in the county.

I have had the pleasure of researching at the Russell County courthouse. It will take a while to collect all the information that awaits.

Good Luck, Luckie, with your on-site Research trip. I hope you have lots of success!!

As for me, I've taken on the Peel side of my Alabama research. Going back to Jesse Peel (b.~1776-1770) of Virginia, then migrated via North Carolina to Shelby County, Alabama. Am finding lots to go on regarding Jesse, but those daughters of his are tricky!! Seems some of em didn't get married or had Common Law relationships without benefit of taking a different last name. Oh Boy! what a tangle! I don't believe in "skeletons in closets"; I only believe in LIFE ... as in, "That's Life!"

If ANYONE out there has connection to Martha Peel/Peal, Lucy/Lacie Peel/Peal and their descendants, PLEASE let me know. There were also Willis Peel, Thomas Peel, Jno (or Jonathan or John) Peel, and another Mary Peel. They were born & raised & lived & mostly died all around Shelby County, Alabama. Lucy/Lacie's daughter Mary E. (b. February 1878; d. April 1957) is my Grandmother (married George Douglas Hill).

I sure hope to get down South in Spring 2010 to do my own site visits. Wishing lots of "hits" to all my fellow genealogy researchers!! ~~ Sue

Hi there Alabama Root Diggers! Hope everyone is experiencing MUCH success with their personal and collective Genealogy Research!:-)

As for me, in order to make any progress with my Barbour, Henry & Montgomery County lines, I am going to have to head that way!

I need a day or two at the local courthouses and a helping of good Ancestor karma to help me knock down a few stubborn brick walls!

Hoping to make it happen before Christmas, so I'll keep you posted!:-)

Keep diggin' up those roots...

Luckie.

I have a short list

I am getting thoroughly confused now.... I did some research on FamilySearch.org the Pilot Site trying to work backwards with my HILL relatives, looking up death information to see if I could find names of parents further back. So I found the death info on my Grandfather George Douglas Hill and it lists "Parents" as RANDLE HILL and ELLEN MCGUIRE.... So now I'm confused! The 1900 US Census lists WILLIAM D. HILL as head of household for my Grandfather and his siblings (whose names, by the way, I can confirm from oral history from my Mother). On the 1900 Census, ELLEN N. (HILL) is listed as wife... so that made me think MCGUIRE is a maiden name. But the RANDLE HILL doesn't mesh with WILLIAM nor middle initial D. I am stumped! Later I found death information for a Gr-Uncle (Grandfather Hill's brother), and it listed just "Mother's" name as ELLA MCGUIRE. Nothing matches. So I tried every conceivable combination of names as lookups in FamilySearch.org Pilot Site death search, and nothing matches with confirmed birth dates (as found on the 1900 Census -- January 1850 for William D. and May 1854 for Ellen). I so need another way to approach this search!!! Anyone have any ideas??

Good Morning, Alabama Root Diggers! I am researching my mother's side of the family:
Last Names: HILL, PEAL, PEEL
Counties: SHELBY, JEFFERSON, Alabama (I don't know if there were others)

My grandfather was George Douglas Hill (b. 1872); my gr-grandfather was William D. Hill (b. January 1850), and here is where I hit a brick wall. I would like to find marriage information for Gr-Grandfather William D. Hill. I would like to find ancestor names, birthdates, etc. for William D. Hill and Gr-Grandmother Hill (I believe her name was Ellen?) Their eldest son is my Grandfather George Douglas Hill, and he was married twice. I have no information on his first wife's name, but they had a daughter ELLEN HILL (b. ~1907). I would like to find the first wife's name and vital info. Grandfather George Hill was widowed and then married MARY PEAL, my Grandmother. Also would be interested in locating any info (vitals, descendants, etc) on ELLEN HILL (above) who married or took the last name BOYD and had three sons at least I am aware of, George, Harold, Samuel.

Luckie, I'm sorry about your mother. God give you & your family strength. Thank you for starting this group! Cordially, Sue
