African Ancestored Genealogy

Dedicated to all things African Ancestored!

I like the inclusiveness of the term; it includes North America, South America; in fact the entire globe!

Another way of expressing this is the African Diaspora

From Wikipedia:

African diaspora; One of the largest diasporas of pre-modern times was the African Diaspora, which began at the beginning of the 16th century. During the Atlantic Slave Trade, twenty million people from West, West-Central and South-east Africa were transported to the Western Hemisphere as slaves.

This population and their descendants were major influences on the culture of English, French, Portuguese and Spanish New World colonies. The Arab slave trade also transported Africans from the continent, although the effect of the Diaspora to the east is more subtle.

It is my hope that you will participate in the discussions, contribute information, and basically get in where you fit in!

NOTE: go to http://gedergenealogy.com for additional insights into the African Diaspora!

Hi Lisa,

When I joined both Facebook and Twitter, it had nothing to do with socializing or genealogy. A few months ago, I was listening to a my favorite local Sunday Morning broadcast, Straight Talk, and the guest speaker mentioned that there were three sites ever entreprenuer should be on. Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Since I continuously toy with the idea of starting my own business, I checked out both Facebook and Twitter and decided to join (was already on LinkedIn). Now have to be honest, Facebook has definitely been more socializing than anything but in a good way for me. I connected with HS friends that I hadn't seen in forever as well as lot of my cousins that I rarely ever see.

Hey, Lorine. I turned off the "follow" on all my groups, and finally, my inbox in manageable again. Thanks for the wonderful tip. One thing I find VERY interesting about GenealogyWise is the different ways the various groups function. In George's group (hey, George, I LOVEEEE this group), we're more of an extended family, sharing tips, asking questions, just basking in the glow of our "group-ness," while in some of my other groups. all they do is post requests for information about their family ... and nobody EVER responds. In yet another group, the owner/moderator continually dumps loads of helpful information, and other groups do absolutely nothing. All in all, though, I must admit, as MUCH as I hate to admit this, that I'm enjoying GenealogyWise. I'm so anti-social networking, and only created MySpace and FaceBook pages under duress and constant nagging from some of my readers. Once created, I haven't a clue what to do with them, and some of the people whom I've accepted as friends (never heard of most of 'em) send me blow by blow accounts of their every movement, pictures I'm afraid to view (really ... I mean REALLY afraid), and requests for me to join yet other social-networking sites.

I'm just not feeling it. When I'm at work (I'm a computer nerd for a publishing company), I spend most of my time online, doing genealogical research, when I'm not out saving servers or installing software/hardware. My research is what drives me and I find SO much joy in tracking down the ancestors of my own family and those of my clients. As such, I don't have a desire to just chit chat with strangers about topics that don't interest me. Maybe I just don't "get" it, or maybe I'm just anti-social. Which is why I joined GenealogyWise only after kicking and screaming for a while. I even created my own group, "Got Genealogy," which I'm loving. Only have about eight members right now, and I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with it, but it's there, for the world to see.

Just wanted to get that off my chest, I suppose. Still don't see any value in my having a Got Genealogy page on FaceBook or MySpace, but it's there.

Am I missing something? Just don't get it. Thanks, have a grand weekend, all.

Hi Lisa,
The Directory is wonderful and growing so quickly! Already an essential part of our toolkit.

I am still getting the logistics of answering posts down. George, thanks for the suggestion about having a separate folder in my email.

Hi Lisa & thanks Lorine,

I hope things are better now.

I created a separate folder/label deal in gmail so all my GenealogyWise mail goes there. That works well for me.

My input will be sporatic over the next few days.
I'm preparing for our family reunion in Lubbock, Texas, where I'll be presenting.
Lots of work yet to be done!

Peace,

Hi Lisa, I'm not George but think I can help you. Just go to each of the groups you are in and choose UNFOLLOW for those you don't want emails from.

If you change your mind you can go back and click FOLLOW.

You can also choose what kinds of emails you want from non-groups in your SETTINGS

So for example I chose to get friend requests and comments to my comments only. (in my settings) It's decreased my barrage of emails considerably!
