Hi Joann,

Thanks for this additional info you sent on Ishmael Turner. If it is alright with you, may I put it on his page at the 1790 census site and attribute it to you?

Hi, Toni,

Here is the compilation I did on Ishmael Turner who was in VT's 1791 census after being in Winchester, NH in 1790.

ISHMAEL TURNER

Listed in Chester, Windsor County with three other free persons in the 1791 Vermont census.

He is also listed in the 1790 Winchester, Cheshire County, NH census with three other free persons. It appears that he probably moved from Winchester to Chester He does not appear to have owned land in Chester. Winchester had other free persons in the 1790 census and some of the ones that later came to Chester said they came from Winchester.

I have not found him in any other census, but there is an Ishmael Turner who enlisted in the Revolutionary War from Northfield, MA. The book, History and Proceedings of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, Vol. 1, The 10th Annual Meeting, 1879, page 483, in telling about Slavery in Massachusetts, has the following:

Ishmael Turner, slave of Seth Field, Esq., farmer. Bought in Boston. The first work he was set at was turning hay; they said he would make a good turner, and so named him Turner, but when he was baptized they called him Ishmael, hence Ishmael Turner. In December, 1776, Ishmael Turner, with others, was enlisted as a soldier to go to Danbury (History of Northfield). He does not appear to have gotten a pension.

I believe the Rosannah Turner who married Pompey Brackey and later married Silas Burdoo may have been related to Ishmael Turner. Since we do not have ages for either of these Turner people, it is not possible to know how she might be related.

No further information found.

Hi All,

I wanted to personally welcome Emiko, Joann, Julie, Michael, Luckie and another Toni to the 1790 Census: Slave Holders, Other Free Persons and Slaves group.

My name is Toni Feeney and I live in Saco, Me. I have been doing genealogy for about 15 years now.

I am happy to have come across this GW site and still trying to figure it out, but believe I am kind of getting the hang of it.

I have known Joann for several years now and she is the reason I got interested in the 1790 census as she has done one for the 1791 census for Vermont. It is called the 1791 census as Vermont did not come into Statehood until then. Vermont was part of New Hampshire and New York.

Another reason for my interest in OFPs is my 5th Gr. Grandfather, Stephen Pellom/Pelham was a person of color and have been trying to find his origin for quite some time now. Know he was in the Rev. War and entered into service in N.H., and then moved on to Vermont. I believe he may have come from Connecticut, but haven't been able to prove???

Anyway, welcome and look forward to enjoying, sharing and learning from you all.

Oh, yeah, hope others will also join in with us.

Sincerely,
Toni Feeney

Hi Joann,

Yes, I remember that Ishmael Turner did turn up in your Vermont database as well as other OFPs from my database and yours intermingled between the two states. The info I have for Ishmael to date is:

Ishmael Turner

Ishmael Turner listed as living in Winchester, Cheshire Co., NH in the 1790 census with 3 Other Free Persons.

There is also an Ishmael Turner listed as living in Chester, Windsor Co., Vt. in the 1791 census with 3 Other Free Persons, so probably the same Ishmael.

Ishmael Turner, slave of Seth Field, Esq., farmer. Bought in Boston. The first work he was set at was turning hay: they said he would make a good turner, and so named him Turner, but when he was baptized, they called him Ishmael, hence Ishmael Turner. In December, 1776, Ishmael Turner, with others, was enlisted as a soldier to go to Danbury. (History of Northfield)

Hi Michael,
I know what you mean about too many pots on the stove, so when and if you get around to adding one more, it will be greatly appreciated!! In the meantime I thank you for your interest and for joining my group. I will be adding more to my database as time permits.

Hi, Toni, I looked again at your website and notice Ishmael Turner listed. Remember that he shows up in Vermont in 1791?

Hi Joann, Thanks for the offer to share information you have compiled for the Vermont OFPs. We have two states working on with Vermont and NH. Now, hopefully, others might get involved and help out with other 1790 census states.

Have begun to put up info on individual OFPs and have links set up on the 1790 Census: Slave Holders, Other Free Persons and Slaves site. Have begun with the Cheschire County New Hampshire page and will continue through the other counties. I have compiled much info for a lot of these OFPs. Hope there is something of interest to others that will help their research.

In Vermont the 1790 census was taken in 1791 the year we joined the Union. I have compiled information on the OFPs that were heads of household in that census. If anyone is interested in a VT OFP, please let me know.

A while back got involved with a project of Slave Holders, Other Free Persons (OFPs) and Slaves for the State of New Hampshire. I got interested in this project through a friend that was doing the State of Vermont. Another part of my interest in this project is I have a 5th Great Grandfather who served in the Revolutionary War and signed on in New Hampshire. His name was Stephen Pellom or Pelham (spelled both ways and there are other variations of the spelling too). I have found Stephen's family in the census records for Vermont. These census state they were OFPs. Other records I have, which will be more in depth in another writing also state these Pellom's were negro, mulatto, and white.

So, I have all this info I have found for the 1790 census of the OFPs and Slaves in the NH census and wanted a place to find to share the info, and genealogywise looks like it might be an avenue for this. I'm hoping others will find it of interest also and contribute.

Will start adding my findings of this 1790 census for New Hampshire asap.
